Read Any Good Books Lately?

I need good book recommendations. Something seriously thoughtful yet light and fast, with emphasis on character development and relationships, but no silly romance novels. Please help me read a book again before my brain melts!

One of my all time favorite books is The Power of One by Bruce Courtenay http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/034541005X/qid=1130469169/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-4444910-4427005?v=glance&s=books

and recently I loved reading Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0385721676/ref=pd_bbs_null_1/103-4444910-4427005?v=glance&s=books

Both of these books kept my nose between the pages in a gripping way and left me for months with images and dreams and lingering thoughts.

Have you ever read "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. It's a great book and enthralling to read. A little on the creepy side, though.

I recommend:
-Secret Life of Bees (a little slow in the beginning, but such a wonderful story)
-Memoirs of a Geisha (my all-time favorite)
-Devil in the White City (a nonfiction about the Chicago world's fair. Pretty interesting)
-Stiff (nonfiction about the very interesting research and uses of corpses, which is totally not my thing but was selected by my book club. Actually a very funny and interesting book, if you can believe it)

Thanks for the great recommendations! I have read The Lovely Bones and Memoirs of a Geisha - both amazing books, I enjoyed them so much. Now I have a great list to get started! Perhaps I will add some to my Christmas wishlist...:)

Thanks everyone!
